Our carbon reduction plan has been prepared in compliance with PPN06/21 ‘Taking account of carbon reduction plans in the procurement of major government contracts’, which came into effect in September 2021.

At Jeakins Weir, environmental sustainability is embedded in how we plan, design and deliver projects. We recognise the construction sector’s responsibility in addressing climate change and are committed to reducing the environmental impact of both our operations and the buildings we create.

We support the UK Government’s net zero ambitions and are actively working towards reducing emissions across all areas of our business. Using our 2022 baseline, we are implementing a structured carbon reduction plan with clearly defined interim targets, focusing on measurable reductions in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, while developing our approach to Scope 3 across our supply chain.

Our long term ambition is to achieve net zero across our operations and the projects we deliver by 2050, working collaboratively with clients, consultants and supply chain partners to drive meaningful change.

Carbon Reduction Initiatives

Over the past 4 years, we have implemented several environmental initiatives in support of our net zero commitment. These include:

  • Environmental management system accredited to ISO14001:2015
  • A review of our car policy to prioritise lower emission vehicles
  • A flexible working policy
  • Awareness programme for all employees to encourage them to use equipment in a more energy efficient manner
  • Work with our IT supplier to prioritise equipment with a good environmental rating
  • Lighting strategy within the office and on site which focusses on LED to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs
  • Office energy audit conducted and monitored monthly in our Environmental Impact Register
  • Carbon reduction training with employees
  • Incorporation of carbon awareness within site inductions
  • Site waste management plans which prioritises reduction, reuse, and recycling
  • Use of the Construction Waste Portal to plan in and design out waste during procurement
  • Development of a site biodiversity plan

Sustainability in practice

We constructed Northamptonshire’s first carbon neutral public building, the £1.5m Stanwick Lakes Visitors Centre for the Rockingham Forest Trust.

The building incorporated the latest eco-friendly M&E systems, photovoltaic panels, grey water recycling, water source pumps in the lake and a sedum roof. The building was also built on stilts enabling floor plain water to run freely underneath.

Our Design Manager was pivotal in the design and integration of these and other sustainable technologies undertaking significant stakeholder engagement with our designer and the client to ensure that the visitor and educational internal environment was optimised whist maximising reductions in CO2.
